From 2019 until 2025, I assisted the executive of the RSB with mentoring duties pertaining to the vocational awards of Chartered Scientist (CSci) and Chartered Biologist (CBiol). Holding both awards with the RSB themselves, in particular:
- I acted as an assessor for both awards.
- I assisted with training new assessors.
- I contributed to the official, on line CBiol guide.
- In 2025, I designed and recorded a series of instructional webinars or vignettes which constituted an official on line on demand course, which is now part of the RSB cache of self taught courses, associated with the RSB “My Learning” materials. As shown in you tube recordings of these vignettes (below), these modules cover all aspects of applying for and retaining CBiol post nominals. In addition, there are specific modules devoted to eligibility criteria for applying, the benefits of becoming CBiol and comparing and contrasting CBiol with CSci for life scientists.
The on line on demand CBiol webinar course consists of discrete power point webinars or modules which cover all aspects of applying for, obtaining and retaining Chartered post nominals (CBiol); Specifically:
Who can apply? In essence a full member of the RSB (MRSB) with a total of five years or more level #7 post graduate experience, which can include the three years requisite post graduate experience required to obtain MRSB. If prospective candidates are not already in possession of a life sciences MSc, demonstrable managerial and definitive post graduate practice will be taken into account during application assessment.
Who Can Apply for Chartered Biologist?
The title of Chartered Biologist (CBiol) is a prestigious recognition awarded by the Society of Biology to individuals who demonstrate a high level of competence and professionalism in the field of biology. To apply for this designation, candidates typically need to meet certain educational and professional criteria. Generally, applicants should hold a degree in biological sciences or a related field, which is usually at least at the level of a Bachelor’s degree. In addition to formal education, relevant work experience in biology or a related discipline is essential. This experience should ideally include practical applications of biological knowledge, research, or teaching. Furthermore, candidates are expected to demonstrate ongoing professional development, showcasing their commitment to staying current in the field. Individuals who are members of professional bodies related to biology may also have an advantage in the application process. Overall, the Chartered Biologist designation is aimed at those who are dedicated to advancing their career in biology and contributing positively to the scientific community.
- What are the benefits to becoming Chartered? In essence vignette #2 tries to explain how full charter builds upon existing RSB benefits associated with prior full membership.
- How are post graduate skills and responsibilities meeting CBiol pre requisites evidenced? Vignette #3 will look at the main stay of the on line application, which is a series of competency answers designed to evaluate different working attributes, including application of technical, ethical and professional theory and practice(s) in the work place; improved working practices and CPD; adherence to internal and external regulations, including aspects of QC; & supervisory team leader experience.
- vignette #4 outlines procedures and time lines for assessing applications and what help is afforded to registrants whose competency evidence is not quite sufficient.
- Finally, vignette #5 outlines annual CPD submissions and examples of CPD practice categories necessary to obtain post nominals year on year.
