Dedication to Science & Education.

Discover my journey through life sciences and my passion for advancing technical education. Explore my work in laboratory environments and my commitment to professional vocational accreditation.

In this web site, I have tried to provide an overview of my career in Science, from inception, in 1987, but with a particular focus in the last 8 years (circa 2017-2025) on ancillary work associated with promoting goals of the Technician Commitment.

Why did I start this work? I and others would conjecture that when I started as a techncial bench scientist in the 1980s and 1990, working conditions, CPD and prospects were better. The Technician Commitment is designed to adress these issues and lay the ground work for better recruitment and retention of Technical scientist(s) as was hitherto the case. I have been motivated to play an active role in goals of the commitment, including promoting the idea that working conditions for UK techs were once better and could be again.

For a more in depth prasy, see publication below, with contributions from me and also video archives of two talks below, which breakdown what has gone increasingly wrong for Technicians and how the commitment framework is planning to put that right. .

A recording of a talk provided to Lab Innovations 2019, in which I describe the problems which beset technicians and the need therefore for a Technician Commitment.

An on line on demand webinar in which I re iterate the reasons for recruitment and retention shortfalls of Technicians in the UK, currently residing in STEM and the inception of the Technician Commitment to address this shortfall.

About Laurence Dawkins-Hall

My career is a testament to the dedication required in both scientific research and the development of technical professionals. From inception as a life scientist technician to my current role in technical education, my aim has always been to uphold and advance technical standards & facilitate technical education.

The podcasts below describe this journey in detail and my concomitant motivation(s) and achievement(s)....

Areas of Expertise

My work spans two key areas: hands-on technical laboratory experience in life sciences (30+ years) and technical education, focusing on professional registration and vocational accreditation (8 years).

Life sciences laboratory work

30 years  of international experience in laboratory settings, contributing to vital scientific research and technical innovation in life sciences.

In that time, I became proficient in techniques underpinning Molecular and cell Biology, protein biochemistry, drug discovery assays, parasitology, genomics and transcriptomics.  Consequently,  I have garnered 40 publications as peer reviewed papers, text book materials and conference abstracts, culminating in 700 citations. In addition, seminal papers I have contributed to have elicited discussion on social media and from international news outlets. See "About me" page.

See my ORCID profile below and links to my Weebly Web methods for these respective experiences and Disciplines.

Professional Registration

Expert advice on how to prepare, submit, benefit from, and renew vocational accreditation with the Science Council I personally participated in this work and mentored 3000 STEM scientists in FE, HE, industry, including apprentices, staff Scientists, University scientists and engineers.

I discharched this duty in my capacity as an Applicant Support Mentor (ASM) for the Science Council; Specialist Advisor on Registration & STEM for NTDC;  & Assistant Registrar for the IST.

In addition to these Technician Commitment duties, I mentored for the RSB on the vocational award of Chartered Biologist (CBiol), (in my capacity as a Chartered Biologist and assessor).

See "Applicant Suport Mentor: Science Council" page and also Landing Page on weebly web site for Professional Registration.

The Need for a Technician Commitment: Background.

The Technician Commitment is designed to address a current recruitment and retention crisis within the UK technical work force, elicited by poor pay, training, Career progression and general working conditions. This was not always the case, as detailed in an article, "Give Technicians the recognition they deserve".

The specifics of the Technician Commitment: 4 pillars.

The machinations of implementing the commitment is predicatedon 4 pillars:

  1. Visibility.
  2. Recognition.
  3. Career Development.
  4. Sustainability.

Pillars 1 & 2 are about recognising Technicians for the work that they do, validating their actions via Professional training and awards, e.g., Professional Registration and institute support for achieving & attending conferences and training courses.

Pillars 3 & 4 are about not just facilitating CPD within current job families but affording clear paths to internal promotion and/or equiping technicians to improve their lot by preparing them and supporting them to obtain more senior positions outside.

My articles and talks describing the Technician existential crisis and possible Solutions.

I have discussed this in detail in my Lab Innovations talk 2019, which is provided as a you tube video in this section and also in numerous blogs, magazine articles and reports, which hightlight the need for and define areas of training that could help, cf.

Chartered Biologist: My Support for this RSB Life sciences vocational award, recapitulating SC Chartered Scientist (CSci) vocational award

Concurrent with my mentoring support for Science Council Professional Registration, I also offered analogous support for the Royal Society of Biology specific vocational award, "Chartered Biologist" (CBiol), which in many ways recapitulates "Chartered Scientist" (CSci) but is offered exclusively to scientists practicing in a life sciences discipline

Specifically, both Chartered Scientist & Chartered Biologist mandate practice @ and/or posession of a level #7 Masters degree with a minimum of five years commensurate post graduate experience expereince, with approx two years of Supervisory and/or team leadership provision encapsulated within that time frame.

In addition, as CBiol is framed in a life sciences context and linked to the RSB, full member ship of the RSB (MRSB) is an application pre requisite (equivalent to three years post graduate practice in the field), with an additional 2 years of experience as MRSB.

In my own context, I:

  • Assessed Scripts for the RSB for the CBiol award.
  • Trained new assessors for the RSB.
  • Designed and delivered an on line and on demand course, describing all aspects of obtaining and retaining the award, the application pro forma and the benefits of CBiol.
  • I have also published articles, summarising these salient points. See the next session.

See Home page "Chartered Biologist" for details.

My Technical Commitment

A more detailed prasy of my Technician Commitment activities, circa 2017-2025

With a long-standing career in life sciences, circa 1985 to 2015, my commitment to technical excellence has always been paramount. I have dedicated myself to rigorous laboratory work and nowto empowering others, through technical education.

My commitment to technical education has been underpinned by a focus on and active mentoring for Science Council Professional Registration.

Specifically, I served as an Applicant Support Mentor (ASM) for the Science Council, circa 2017 to 2025; A Special Advisor for NTDC (2018-2025) & Assistant Registrar & principal mentor for the IST (2017-2023) and collectively in those three roles I provided in person mentoring at National conferences and on line mentoring for Professional Registration. In addition, I assessed prospective applications for registration for the Science Council, RSB and IST and, regarding, the RSB (in particular) I also provided on line training for Science Council Registration Assessors. All in all, I estimate that I reviewed about 300 scripts during a five year period, when I actively assessed for the these organisations.

Furthermore, I also made available on line registration materials for the Universities of Glasgow, including an archived workshop QUB and Cambridge, respectively.

In 2025, I was part of a working group for the Science Council, in association with the RSB, RSC and the EPAO, Marshall Assessment, that devised a pilot to look at the feasibility of offering qualified STEM apprentices the possibility of Professional registration in association with their apprentice standard certificate. This was formally implemented by the Science Council in 2025 and is supported by a number of licenced bodies, including the RSB. I was part of the working group, by virtue of holding an apprentice End Point Assessor  (EPA) position with Marshall assessment and have spoken about the fast route to registration (R2R) for the Science Council at numerous outside meetings, including MMU apprentice induction days (circa 2024/2025) and Lab innovations, 2025.

Also in 2025, I designed and produced an on line learning guide for an RSB specific register, cf. Chartered Biologist (CBiol) (commensurate with Chartered Scientist (CSci), but associated exclusively with life scientist professionals who are full members of RSB, cf. MRSB) as well;assessed for this register and took part in “training the trainer” for the RSB. See also the page devoted to Royal Society of Biology commitment activities.
