Biosafety qualifications and practice
I have practiced Biosafety throughout my career and moreover have been accredited as a Biosafety Practitioner Level #1 (foundation) at the University of Edinburgh, circa 2011. See certificates below. Examples of empirical practice in the field are as follows:
- Making sure laboratory practices comply with GLP mandated by the Lab sustainability framework LEAF, which I help manage for my current department of Cancer Studies at the University of Leicester (circa 2025-2026).
- In a previous post, set up and managed an aseptic microbiology laboratory (circa 2013-2016).
- In another post (circa 2008-2012), set and organised a new lab for the PI, including provision of COSHH and chemical storage and waste disposal.
Licensed and experienced biosafety professional
- I hold a licence to practice under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, with extensive experience in categories A-C.
- My background includes 35 years of biomedical science laboratory practice, focusing on strict adherence to biosafety protocols.
- In 2011, my practice over decades in different life sciences enviroments was ratified by the ISTR in the form of Biosafety certification.
- This involved training and exams.
- Moreover, in 2017 I invoked my experiential practice and qualifications in order to contribute to my vocational competencies culminating in the award of Chartered Biologist and Chartered Scientist.
Training and mentoring in biosafety
- As an award-winning STEM educator, I provide training and mentorship in biosafety practices.
- I have done this in a number of labs.
- I focus on developing clear, accessible protocols and fostering a culture of safety among laboratory personnel.
- Since 2025, I have also tried to inculcate safety practice compliant with the lab sustainability and LEAF.
Comprehensive risk assessment expertise
- My expertise covers comprehensive risk assessments for various biological agents, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Category #2 tissue culture and microbiology laboratories.
- In addition I have managed chemical COSHH, including waste disposal streams.
- I ensure all procedures comply with national and international biosafety guidelines, maintaining a safe working environment.
- Recently, I have been instrumental in transitioning from paper/pdf COSHH forms to an online digital COSHH format called Sevron.
- Since the 1990's I have instructing students in current safety protocols and up dating practices with new procedures like Sevron
Ensuring compliance and regulatory adherence
- I am adept at navigating complex regulatory frameworks, ensuring full compliance with biosafety regulations and standards.
- My role involves continuous monitoring and updating of safety practices to meet evolving requirements.
- I currently help manage safety practices within cancer studies.
